Marmara Equator

Marmara Equator is the striped white marble of Marmara Island. Grey lines land on a clean white ground almost as though set out with a ruler. The bands run from hairlines to broad charcoal ribbons, and the direction holds across the whole slab. In the trade it also travels as Equator, Marmara Zebra, Marmara Pyjamas and Bleu Striata. A pattern this regular is an instrument more than a decoration. Run horizontally it widens a room, turned upright it raises a ceiling. The lines continue from slab to slab, a corridor floor or a full-height wall becomes one drawn surface, and the joints disappear into the stripes. It is chosen when the architecture itself is meant to be the pattern.
